What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy is very gentle, but powerful, non-invasive holistic treatment which can restore balance and harmony in the body and so enabling it to release any adverse effects of stress, injury and trauma.

Craniosacral therapists use a light touch to work with the whole body, we use our hands to listen to your body, in much the same way that a counsellor may listen to your words.  This can help your body release any unwanted issues it may be holding onto. Your body responds to the sensitive touch by beginning to listen to itself. Craniosacral Therapy supports your body’s innate ability to balance, restore and heal itself, as well as helping to reduce stress and build your underlying energy and help your body to release any unwanted issues it may be holding onto.

Craniosacral Therapy originates from the research and work of American osteopath, Dr William Sutherland. He discovered intrinsic movements of the bones in the head and his further research revealed specific rhythms in the body. He observed that these rhythms are inextricably linked with physical, mental and emotional health and that restriction of these movements corresponds to a reduction of the natural capacity to self-heal.

As Craniosacral therapists we are trained to be able to ‘listen’ and feel these rhythms and motions. These are centred around the cerebrospinal fluid that bathes our spinal cord and brain, within which also contains the Central Nervous system. We work with these structures from the cranium to the sacrum, hence the name, Craniosacral therapy! However, we work with the whole person, including fascia, muscles, nervous system, fluids and bones.

My role as a Craniosacral therapist is to support your body’s innate ability to balance, restore and heal itself.

By ‘listening’ to your body using what we call a butterfly touch, it is possible for me to detect and release tensions and restrictions in a gentle, supported and comfortable way.

We work to restore physical balance and emotional balance in your body and mind. This can be thought of as if we are all carrying around buckets, filled with our responsibilities, stress, worries, ambitions and beliefs. When these buckets get too full, they become so heavy they weigh us down and stop us from reaching our true potential and enjoying life. Craniosacral Therapy can help us to take some things out of those buckets and to stop everything feeling so heavy allowing us to enjoy our lives again and find peace.
